Bei der Wahl des Debüts stieß ich auf einen Film, der mit unglaublich verstörender Empathie seine Protagonisten auf ihrem Weg aus einer schier verzweifelten Lebenssituation auf zu neuen rettungsversprechenden Ufern begleitet. In manchmal fast dokumentarisch anmutenden Bildern und Situationen und einer unglaublich intensiven Spielweise, die die ganze zur Verfügung stehende Bandbreite menschlicher Gefühlswelten auslotet fordert dieser Film unsere Bereitschaft zur Empathie geradezu lässig und braucht einen Vergleich mit Arbeiten von Ken Loach nicht zu scheuen. Und – dieser Film hat zudem auch das Motto dieses wunderbaren Filmfestivals innerlichst beglaubigt. Was ist Heimat? Was bedeutet der Verlust von Heimat? Und kann Heimat wirklich da sein,wo man sich gerade befindet? Kann man Heimat etwa mitnehmen? Der Film zeichnet sich durch eine erzählerische Reife aus, wie sie nur ganz selten bei einem Debütfilm zu finden ist und ich gratuliere von ganzem Herzen der dänischen Regisseurin mit serbischen Wurzeln Marijana Jankovic und ihrem Cast und ihrer Crew zu ihrem Film HOME (HJEM).

In selecting a debut film, I came across a work that—with incredibly unsettling empathy—accompanies its protagonists as they make their way out of a seemingly hopeless situation toward new shores that promise salvation. Through imagery and situations that at times feel almost documentary-like, and performances of incredible intensity that explore the full spectrum of human emotion, this film effortlessly calls upon our capacity for empathy and stands comparison with the works of Ken Loach. Moreover, the film profoundly embodies the very spirit of this wonderful film festival. What is home? What does the loss of home mean? Can home truly exist wherever one happens to be? Is it possible to take home with you? The film displays a narrative maturity rarely found in a debut feature, and I offer my heartfelt congratulations to the Danish director of Serbian heritage, Marijana Jankovic, along with her cast and crew, on their film HOME (HJEM).
